Man Arrested for Allegedly Staging His Own Kidnapping in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged man identified as Adamu Abdullahi, a scrap iron dealer, for allegedly staging his own kidnapping in an attempt to extort N1.5 million from his employer.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, the case was reported on May 19 after one Abubakar informed the police that his brother, Adamu Abdullahi, had gone missing and could not be reached.
During the course of the investigation, a video later surfaced showing the alleged victim being beaten with planks and threatened with death unless a ransom of N1.5 million was paid by his employer.
’However, upon careful analysis of the video and subsequent investigation, detectives observed inconsistencies, as there were no visible signs of physical ass@ult on the alleged victim after his return home. The suspect was subjected to further interrogation and eventually confessed that the k!dnapping was staged in collaboration with one Adelowo Olalekan Akorede ‘m’, aged 35 years, one Yusuf Lukman ‘m’, aged 39 years, and another accomplice currently at large. Investigation further revealed that the suspects intended to fraudulently obtain money from the victim’s employer, one Lawal Abubakar ‘m’, who regularly entrusted him with funds for scrap iron business transactions.''
The Commissioner of Police also disclosed that the suspect admitted to diverting the sum of N490,000 previously entrusted to him for business purposes.
According to the police, the said amount has been recovered, while investigators also visited the workshop where the fake kidnapping video was reportedly recorded.
The police added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice.
